Space Pets

shadowgale96:

I wish you could have a pet in ME:A, like pyjaks and hamsters are cute, But I’d love to have a cat. Plus, I think Jaal would imminently fall in love with one.

Jaal: What is this fluffy creature?

Ryder: That’s my son.

Jaal: …what.

Ryder: *laughs* That’s my cat. It’s a pet some humans have.

Jaal: *picks up the cat*

Jaal: What it is doing with its claws?

Ryder: It’s kneading, it means it likes you.

Jaal: *pets the cat* Why does it vibrate?

Ryder: It’s purring, it means he loves you.

Jaal:

Jaal: Ryder, our son has my eyes.

some interesting little Angara things I’ve found so far:

sorrelchestnut:

  • “Tehet” seems to be their word for kett.
    • Which is interesting to me because whoever in the Initiative named the kett seemed to arrive accidentally at a very similar word for them as the Angara?  I wonder if there’s something the kett shout when they’re fighting that has that hard “eht” sound that both people picked up.
  • “skkut” is their word for “fuck.”
    • At least a couple times I’ve heard people use it very casually; i.e. “skutting stars, that’s incredible” in a conversation with a near-stranger.
    • Which is funny because Jaal seemed surprised at the flexibility with which we use the word “shit” in cursing.  Since the Angara seem to have taboos about illness the way we do about sex, maybe bodily waste is a far more serious curse than fucking?
  • “Stars” seems to a very mild exclamation for them, sort of the way that even non-religious people will say “God” in a moment of surprise or frustration.
    • A longer form is “Stars and skies.”  I’ve also heard “Stars guide you” and other similar permutations.
    • Since their religion doesn’t seem to involve a deity figure, the nebulous concept of the greater universe seems to have largely taken on the same role in their culture.  They call the ice pillars on Voeld something that translates to “hands reaching for the stars,” which is beautiful and supports this theory for me.
    • Maybe at one point they had deist leanings in their religious history, like Suvi’s (and some Founding Fathers’) belief in a clock maker God?  That would explain a lot of the vocal tics.
  • “Motherless” is used as an insult, relatively mild, like “bastard.”
    • Which makes sense for a culture in which you don’t just have one mother, but several or more.  For someone to be “motherless” would mean they’re alone in the world, with no support system, much like “bastards” in certain parts of Western history.
  • “Vesaan” is an insult, though I have no idea what it means.
    • Context: “one mean motherless vesaan.”
  • “Taoshay” is an angaran endearment, I believe fairly analogous to “beloved.”  Something serious, how you would address a spouse or partner rather than a casual lover.
  • Adhi are canine analogues, likely not dissimilar to varren.  Apparently they can be made into pets; if you raise one from a pup, they bond for life.
    • Kaerkyn can also be kept as pets.  Good to know that the Angara share the human trait of “yes, this dangerous animal could be absolutely deadly, can we take it home and keep it?”
  • “Adhi” is also a casual insult that Liam, adorably, picked up from Jaal; he calls him a “weaseling adhi” in the armor scene, sort of like you’d say “sly dog.”
  • They apparently have weak taste buds in comparison to many Milky Way species; Peebee complains that their food smells great but tastes horrible, to which Jaal points out that our food is incredibly bland.
    • Their food is also in paste form; they have supply shortages, which means they don’t get a lot of fresh or freshly prepared food.
  • I wonder if this means that they have a good or bad sense of smell?  They clearly have BALLER eyesight, and their electrostatic powers mean that they have seriously enhanced touch receptors, and they do have such flat noses, it’s hard to imagine that they get a lot of airflow to have a good sense of smell.
  • Although they DO take great pride in their appearance, including scent.
    • When he ships out with you one of the things Jaal brings is a bunch of “salves, creams, and perfumes,” and Peebee can comment on how great he smells all the time.
    • At least one of the salves that he packs is “hydrogenated ash salve” to keep the “neck flaps” (as Peebee calls them) glossy.
  • Angara apparently, much like humans, will sing while performing grooming rituals.  They will ALSO vigorously deny this while confronted.
    • Or maybe Jaal’s just embarrassed for his singing voice.  Who knows?

More to come as I find them!

Pleeeease tell me requests are still open, plleeeeeeeeeease. Alien companions of ME:A reacting to a squishy human baby for the first time? Pls? And the mom being completely fine with them holding the little bundle of squish?

beenwaiting600yearsforthis:

YES! I loved writing this one! Thanks for the request and hope you enjoy!

“You were on the team that saved the arks!! Hold my baby!!!” The human mother of one particularly squishy and flubby baby yelled.

Peebee
Eyes bugging out of her skull, freaking out internally as the human baby ball of squish is shoved into her arms. Peebee looked over to Ryder, “Help!” written all over her face as the rest of the crew members laughed at her expense.
Peebee awkwardly held the baby in her arms, the child drooling and squeaking out baby laughs. One particularly loud giggle cause her to laugh though. Peebee smiled at the ball of cuteness, a glint of happiness evident in her eyes for a moment. One, short lived moment. Rocking the baby slightly she look the cute baby in the eyes, “Fat.”.

Drack
The baby was thrust into his arms. All he could think of while looking at the baby was how squishy the ball of flub was. The baby grabbed hold of his horn goatee and yanked on it, causing him to grin. “Pretty bold for something so squishy. Don’t you realise you’re mostly made of water?” Drack laughed.

Vetra
She was careful, almost too careful, trying her best to manoeuvre the baby into her arms the way the woman was showing her. The baby gurgled and giggled, tiny chubby hands patting her mandibles. Vetra’s heart immediately melted at the sight.
“I see why funny human baby videos are watched more than cats.”

Jaal
He was in love with the tiny human instantaneously. Cooing in Shelesh and rocking the baby. Ryder teased him for his immediate love of human children, “Careful Jaal, she might think you will steal her baby.”
“Do they all come out like this?” “Pretty much.” “So when can we have one?” The comment may have caused Ryder to pass out.

Kallo
His reaction was similar to Peebee’s except with a more intense freak out. “Am I holding it right? Is it still breathing? Is liquid supposed to come out from there!?! Why is it biting me?! Ryder help!?!”

Lexi
Probably the only one to graciously take the child, coddle it for a moment and return the child in due time like a normal person. “Was that so hard?” Lexi asked. “Yes” was the resounding response from the non-human crew.
