Stop vilifying adults that live with their parents.
We’re still deep in one of the worst economic recessions of modern times. For many of us its not a choice but a requirement in order to survive. For many of us we have disabilities that make finding accommodation that suit our needs a lot harder and a lot more expensive.
Many of us pay into the household. Many of us are trapped in abusive households because we don’t have the means to leave. We aren’t moochers or afraid to leave the nest. The world simply isn’t built to support us anymore.
This is actually an incredibly western (and specifically American) thing. In a lot of other countries and cultures it’s NOT AT ALL uncommon for an adult to still live with their parents. As a second generation immigrant, it’s BEWILDERING to me. My cousin still lives with our grandmother; it’s important. She needs someone to watch after her, and she has the space… why wouldn’t he?
This obsession with “adults” being “fully independent” of their parents is a fully American, bizarrely capitalist notion and it needs to be stomped into the ground.
I’m the only offspring in my entire extended family to live in America.
I’m also the only one to ever live away from my parents, and all my cousins are older than me.
it’s been a difficult few months, after i moved back with my mom because i couldn’t live alone anymore.
a few years ago, i resolved to be a young working professional right out of college. i was going to enter a media team to become an animator, and from there my own director. famous and rich
then, i got very sick during the summer prior to my junior college year. suddenly, i couldn’t reliably live independently anymore. continuing school was hard enough, upholding a job was out of the question.
i managed to graduate college with honors, very impressive for someone with a new chronic illness. but having neglected therapy and medication for three years, i crashed a few months after turning 23. i had to move back with my mom. she would take care of me.
it’s both disheartening and enlightening to realize that i’m someone i dreaded to become; in my early twenties, with an art degree, and unemployed while leaching off my parents. i continue to create art and flex my skills, but it can be a struggle when i get caught in a depressive loop of, ‘what’s the point?’
during the past few years, i had to re-learn what it meant to be a productive artist. although i spend many days where i can’t even go outside, i’m still an artist like any other. i can’t produce media the way i wished i could, but i’m still making good things.
it’s a lesson that no one taught me. high-school graduates aren’t taught to expect the possibility of becoming disabled in the midst of their formative years.
its a lesson i’m still trying to absorb, but it’s an important one.

if you’ve seen the breaking news that trump just signed an executive order today to end the family separation policy here’s some quick info to keep things in perspective
this doesn’t end the “zero tolerance” policy of prosecuting anyone who crosses the border “illegally”
the only thing this changes is that going forward, entire families will be detained together while awaiting prosecution
this offers no solution for freeing the thousands of children currently held in ICE child prisons or any path to reuniting them with their families
children will still be detained and treated as criminals
this will likely lead to thousands of families being held in ICE facilities and tent cities that will face the exact same issues of overcrowding, abuse, and inhumane conditions that exist in the child prisons
this is not a victory or a solution. This is the administration trying to cover their asses and avoid any more public outrage. They want people to see this as the end of the news story and go back to their lives. They want people to forget the thousands of children they are still keeping in cages in ICE facilities across the nation. This issue is not over and we cannot stop being outraged until we are given proof that the thousands of kidnapped children are returned to their families, and that the policy of arresting and prosecuting people who cross the border is ended.
This is one of those things that I already knew was true, but seeing it so blatantly displayed makes me feel like like I am finding out about it for the first time.

This isn’t the CIA, or some government conspiracy. It’s a corporate conspiracy. Sinclair Broadcast Group have been buying up local news stations precisely so they can force stations to read scripts just like this one. It’s dangerous, scary, and very worrying for the future of news media. Last Week Tonight did a segment about Sinclair and their terrifying plans for the future last season, which you can watch here. I would really recommend giving it the time, because this is really something that should not be taken lightly.
